Laínte
da Casconha
“Áques larfamos Laínte” – Here we speak Laínte
In the nineteenth century, the inventive spirit of the people from Castanheira de Pêra led to the creation of Laínte da Casconha. Laínte is a language that only the insiders understand and Casconha is an invented word that means Castanheira de Pêra.
It is a language that was used by street vendors that travelled around to sell the fabrics from Castanheira de Pera. Laínte allowed sellers to communicate among them without the customers understanding it and, in case of assault, to settle on a strategy to defend themselves. The last street vendors who could speak Laínte were: Mr. Valdemar Rosinha, Mr. José da Silva Mendes and Mr. Virgilio.Nowadays, Mr. Domingos Alves is the only person that still knows Laínte.
Campino's cap
The only factory in the world making campinos' caps
Campinos are the wild cattle herders in the Portuguese region of Ribatejo. The caps are manufactured in the only existing factory worldwide, located in the Industrial Park of Safrujo, in Castanheira de Pêra.
This factory, besides campinos' caps (green and red), also manufactures the traditional (black) caps used by the fishermen in Nazaré. The original caps were an integral part of the traditional clothes of the Neveiros do Coentral (in charge of the production of ice for the former Portuguese royal family), and they still are an ex-libris of Castanheira de Pêra. The tradition of offering them to the authorities that visit the region is still alive.The caps also served as a pocket to store tobacco, matches and money, keeping it in the bottom of their lining to avoid being subject to moisture. This is why the caps are long.
